Donate To The Families of the Five People We Lost Friday As They Served Our Community

Heather here, compelled to blog today for one simple reason:

I hope you'll help the families of those we lost in Friday's tragedies by donating some money to any of their various funds.

Hey, even a buck will help them out. Wait until payday if you need to and put this on your to-do list. There are five families planning for funerals they had hoped not to plan for many years to come. Any of us who has ever lost a loved one knows how expenses can pile up after a death and money from the community is a great comfort. It's still not as much of a comfort, however, as knowing that people donated to your loved one's memorial fund because they were touched by your loss. Let's make sure these five families know how much their loved ones touched our lives.

New Traveling Wilburys Double Album and DVD in Stores Today

So they’ve been out of print for a while. So what if two of the band’s members have long since passed away. The Traveling Wilburys have a three-disc set out today on Rhino Records. Remember songs like “Handle With Care” and “End Of The Line?” Well, those two songs are on Disc 1. Disc 2 is the DVD complete with “The True Story of the Traveling Wilburys,” which we’re just aching to see since we’ve heard a couple conflicting reports about how it all began. There are a couple previously unreleased tracks, “Like a Ship” and “Maxine” in the set. It’s refreshing to hear old favorites again. Makes you ache for the days when Roy Orbison and George Harrison were still around. The set’s liner notes contain special instructions on how to do the Wilbury Twist. What a great set to take you back to better days of music past!

Richie Sambora In Rehab Right Before Bon Jovi Album Release

Of all the rock stars who could have ended up in rehab any day, Richie Sambora definitely wasn’t on our shortlist. But in rehab Sambora is today and we’re not sure exactly why. The rumor mill has sounded off that it is some type of substance abuse landing Sambora in a Los Angeles facility. Substance abuse is pretty believable after the kind of year he’s had. He divorced Heather Locklear and had something going with Denise Richards. That didn’t work out either, but Richards was kind enough to accompany Sambora to his father’s funeral after he died of lung cancer. Death and divorce are never kind to the psyche.

Whatever his specific problem, Sambora is finally getting the help he needs. But will he be out in time to promote the new Bon Jovi album, “Lost Highway?” Their song, “(You Want To) Make A Memory”, was #1 on this week’s VH1 “Top 20 Video Countdown.” The new album is out Tuesday, June 19, giving Sambora little over a week from now to get it together and get out of rehab. According to People, Sambora will make a Today Show appearance on the 19th. Their tour dates start as soon as June 24 in London. Then they’re set to play two of the biggest music festivals in the U.S., Summerfest in Wisconsin and Live Earth in New Jersey, the latter of which is actually a global event. No pressure, Richie.

We always knew Keith Richards had a bigger-than-life personality. It was about time he ended up on the big screen with the likes of Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, and Orlando Bloom in Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End.. It would have been nice if Keith had gotten a bit more face time in the movie. But he did deliver his few lines quite well. We can never understand a word he says on stage at Stones shows, but his lines were spoken very clearly in the film.

Once in pirate garb, the resemblance between him and Depp was quite uncanny. For more on Depp and Richards, pick up this week’s issue of Rolling Stone magazine, in which Depp calls his idol “Two-take Richards.” The Rolling Stone interview delves into how the two met, how they work together, and what they think of each other. They seem to be quite the happy couple on set.

That girl will never go to the grocery store here again without us running after her begging for autographs. Given how gracious she seems, we think she can handle it. Arizona’s finest export is now Jordin Sparks! Blake Lewis was really no match for her. She wiped the floor with him.

As for Bette Midler, what happened to her voice? Who stole it? When did she start sounding that bad? It was rough listening to that performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings” last night.

The Motown folks did great. Then there was Joe Perry of Aerosmith performing with Sanjaya Malakar. Sanjaya didn’t deserve to perform with that kind of royalty!

OK, so we have a couple complaints about the Idol finale. But what is wrong with us? Jordin won; how can we complain? Congrats to Jordin, who sings better than all those other kids, and Bette Midler too.

Phil Spector’s Trial Today: Forensic Evidence Hidden From Prosecution

A piece of Lana Clarkson’s fingernail believed to have had traces of a passing bullet on it is believed to have been removed from the crime scene at Spector’s castle and hidden from the prosecution. Criticism of Robert Charles Comer will never end. We come to realize that, but couldn’t the guy come up with some better last words? Perhaps if he had been executed last week, would it have been “Go Suns?” What about, “Gee I’m glad I’m getting executed today.” As many years as the guy had on death row waiting to be executed and that’s the best he could come up with? “Go Raiders.” We’re a little disappointed. Executions aren’t nearly as exciting as they used to be. Even Comer’s last meal request was pretty boring. Fried okra, four dinner rolls, two pieces of banana bread, and generous amounts of butter and salt – that’s what he wanted for his final meal. Given the lack of excitement around death row executions these days, and the public’s general annoyance with how long they take, maybe it’s time to speed up the process a little. It took seven years from sentencing to today for Comer. What was seven years for? It certainly wasn’t for “Go Raiders.”

Ike Turner just got out a brief stint in jail after being arrested on a bogus warrant. It certainly didn’t help that he was going 80 on the 405 in L.A. in his Mercedes. But when cops pulled him over, he was served with a felony narcotics warrant from 1989! This was at around midnight Tuesay. By 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, police realized the warren wasn’t valid and let Ike go. We imagine Tina Turner probably got a kick out of this one.

The trial of what could be the next O.J. Simpson continued in it’s sixth day yesterday with Rommie Davis testifying that there was “something wrong” with Spector. She dined with him on three consecutive nights before the murder of Lana Clarkson and said, “He was not his usual self.” In other words, he wasn’t the threatening, gun-waving lunatic he usually was? She said she hadn’t seen him drink alcohol until the night of the murder when she warned him that drinking with the medication he was taking would be a “lethal combination.”

Yet another woman took the stand today in the Spector Spectacle to say that the “wall of sound” producer had once pulled a gun on her. Stephanie Jennings testified that Spector threatened her with a gun when she refused to come to his hotel suite at 3 a.m. one night in 1994. On this particular night, Jennings and Spector had been partying. Spector was drunk and Jennings had gone back to her suite to sleep before being awoken by Spector’s bodyguard. Spector was demanding she join him in his suite.

So how many more days can the prosecution find women formerly accosted with guns by Spector? We shall wait and see!

The Spector Spectacle began again yesterday and its most interesting development was testimony from Diane Ogden, Spector’s former assitant. Ogden said on the stand that Spector once threatened to shoot her in 1989 when she refused to have sex with him. Ogden also said he was demonic and chased her with an Uzi once. The jury also got to hear an answering machine message Spector left for 1993 girlfriend Dorothy Melvin that said, “Be very careful what you say to me because nothing is worth your life.”

We’re not exactly sure this is a good idea, but neither was leaving Genesis. See what happens is, you go to We7 and download all the free songs you want, but they have commercials embedded into them. This takes selling out to the max.

Not only that, but it feels kind of like Minority Report where the citizens of the future were constantly marketed to via their retinas – except with We7, they are marketed to aurally. The site tells artists that, “your fans get free – you get paid.” It sounds like a good deal for the struggling indie artist and struggling music fan, both of whom haven’t much to spend and want a deal on entertainment.

Peter Gabriel is a founding investor in the company, run out of Oxford. The site’s “Tastemaker” function launches next month and will allow an online community of artists, band members, and fans to decide whether songs are good enough to be published.

As for the ads embedded into the music, they will only last about a month before disappearing. Then you can enjoy your downloads commercial-free. The ads are also targeted to your demographic. Welcome to the borg!

At the earliest, the Spector Spectacle will be back next MONDAY. That would be Monday, May 7, as in the first day of May the trial is set to take place. That’s only if Spector’s lawyer, Bruce Cutler, can get his sugar under control by then, or his diabetes meds, or whatever it is. It seems every news outlet or gossip rag has something different to say about Cutler’s health. Maybe it’s just the karma Cutler gets for having defended John Gotti.

Do lawyers bill differently when they are home working on delayed cases than they do actually arguing their cases in courtrooms? Just wondering.

This gives Spector plenty of free time to go wig shopping for the rest of this week. Perhaps he can go with Britney Spears or Cher? Maybe we’ll see a new ‘do when court is back in session. Again, just wondering. How is Spector spending his days off?

Day Three of the Spector Spectacle didn’t really happen…Phil Spector’s lawyer has called in a sick day. There are no details on the lawyer’s illness, but jurors got the day off today. So hopefully we’ll have the official Day Three of the trial tomorrow so we can get our money’s worth out of following this thing. It’s already starting to feel like the Michael Jackson trial again – except it was Jackson and not his lawyer who was always calling in sick.

Phil Spector's murder trial won't be back until Monday. So we have all weekend to wonder if he really didn't kill actress Lana Clarkson simply because she was taller than him. The trial has only just begun and we're awaiting some juicy details. So far we have learned that he once pulled a gun on Joan Rivers' former manager. Though that is not nearly as exciting as one pulling a gun on Joan Rivers -- something we imagine many have wanted to do over time -- it is one interesting detail nonetheless. We've also heard his gun-brandishing legends before. So we'll wait and see what comes out in Day Three of the trial on Monday.

The Many Eccentricities of Phil Spector

He’s a hermit.

He’s a bit of a recluse, living first behind gates and “keep out” signs and then – a castle. He kept his mansion dark all the time and didn’t really leave at all.

He didn’t grant an interview to anyone for a good 25 years until talking to Mick Brown of the Telegraph in the UK. He didn’t work for about 23 until producing two songs for a Starsailor record.

He put up an electric fence around his mansion and employed bodyguards – as if the fence weren’t enough.

Not an average kid…

Cheated at Monopoly and Scrabble as a kid.

Dreamed of being strangled in his youth.

In his early years of songwriting, he told all he met he was a genius.

His parents were first cousins.

His given first name is actually Harvey.

Temper, Temper!

He held ex-wife Ronnie prisoner in their mansion when they were married.

When she was on tour with the Ronettes, he’d call make her leave the phone next to her face on the pillow so he could hear her breathing all night long.

He bought her a mannequin replica of himself for her to keep in the front seat of a sports car he bought her. He was a bit possessive of her because he was afraid she’d “run off” with a Beatle, according to biographer Richard Williams. Then Spector hooked up with the Beatles himself, salvaging a Let It Be album in which the title track was devoid of strings and choir at that time.

Spector once pulled a gun on The Ramones during an argument as they were recording. That’s not all though; he allegedly held a gun to a former girlfriend/employee’s head in two separate incidents. His violent, curse-ladden outbursts were legendary. If you think Alec Baldwin’s voicemail to his daughter was bad, you never were on the receiving end of one of Spector’s ragefests.

According to the prosecution today, Spector had a pattern of getting drunk, taking a woman back to his place, then when she wished to leave he’d forbid her. He’d threaten her with a gun to force her to stay.

Had a reputation the preceded him as a control freak.

We could call it what it really is – a trial – but we all know it has the potential to be a spectacle. If you’ve been waiting for a salacious celebrity trial to come to TV for the past two years since Michael Jackson was acquitted of child molestation charges in 2005, here you go. Fifty reporters are expected to sardine themselves into the courtroom so you can expect this one to be all over the news wherever you may turn for it.

How The Mighty Have Fallen…
Not that Spector was ever the picture of grace; you did notice his preferred hairstyle, right? Spector is (or was) a musical genius. He was the guy who created the “Wall Of Sound.” It’s quite an accomplishment for a teenager who initially hoped to become a French translator for the UN. He was working with big names by age 21 like Sonny Bono and the Valley’s own Glenn Campbell. By this time he was also a millionaire, having played a role as either musician or producer in 1960s hits like The Drifters’ On Broadway and Ben E. King’s Spanish Harlem.

He put out not just a few but 20 consecutive hits at one point, including:

Heather volunteered at the Ride For The Children on Sunday and took photos of some very tired cyclists. She was at the 45-mile post clanging a cow bell and handing out peanut butter sandwiches. The Ride raises money every year for homeless children across Arizona.
